A strong earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Sunday, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the US Geological Survey and local officials said.

The 6.3-magnitude quake struck the town of Bansalan on Mindanao at 12:22 pm (0422 GMT), the USGS said in a bulletin.

The quake was recorded at a depth of 15.6 kilometers, it said, slightly shallower than at first reported by the agency.

The earthquake, the second tremor to hit Davao del Sur, jolted the area on Sunday noon.

The second tremor occurred at 12:22 p.m. six kilometers southeast of Magsaysay town.

The first quake happened at 7:28 a.m. nine kilometers west of Magsaysay town.

Of tectonic origin, the quakes had a depth of 15 and 16 kilometers, respectively.

"It was strong, but things did not topple or fall off," Major Peter Glenn Ipong, the police chief of Bansalan, told AFP by telephone from the epicenter.

Ipong and civil defense officials in the region reported strong shaking but said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The USGS in an earlier bulletin put the epicenter two kilometers east of the neighboring town of Magsaysay before revising the location to Bansalan.

The Philippines is regularly rocked by quakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The region around Bansalan, a town of 60,000 people, was struck by three deadly quakes over a two-week period in October 2019, killing at least 10 people.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said intensity 5 was felt in Kidapawan City, Arakan, Carmen, Kabacan, Makilala and M’Lang, North Cotabato; City of Koronadal and Banga, South Cotabato; Matalam,Cotabato; Bansalan, Hagonoy, Magsaysay and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, while intensity 4 was recorded in Davao City; Banisilan and Midsayap, North Cotabato; Don Carlos, Bukidnon; Polomok, Sto. Nino and Norala, South Cotabato South Cotabato; Alabel, Kiamba and Malapatan, Sarangani; Palimbang and Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat.

Cotabato City; Cagayan de Oro City; Kadingilan and Kitaotao, Bukidnon; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Maco and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro had intensity 3.
