The nurse who helped a homeless woman give birth on the sidewalk in Makati City in August this year has received a “Bayaning Nars” award from the Philippine Nurses Association.

Mary Lorraine Pingol, according to a report on GMA’s “24 Oras” on Monday, went viral on social media after the Barangay Bangkal Fire Emergency Rescue Disaster Support posted photos of her helping the woman along Osmeña Highway.

Pingol was on her way to work on Aug. 18 when she was asked to help deliver a baby. And without hesitation, she assisted the emergency responders.

“Honestly, when I am called a hero, I am ashamed because I do not consider myself a hero. I did that to help the woman who gave birth on the road as a nurse or as a good Samaritan, a person who would help his neighbor because she was capable of doing so),” Pingol said.

Aside from the Bayaning Nars award, Pingol was also recognized by the Daisy Foundation in the United States.

In 2013, Pingol was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.

However, despite being immunocompromised amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Pingol said, she still wanted to help others as long as she had the capacity to do so.
