Bill seeks cheaper caskets for poor Filipinos

Cebu Rep. Vincent Franco Frasco is batting for the passage of House Bill 7846 setting a price ceiling of P12,000 for a casket for indigents.

“HB 7846 compassionately eases the financial burdens of grieving indigent Filipinos,” Frasco said.

“When this bill becomes law, funeral parlors are required to make available for poverty-stricken families caskets worth P12,000.00 or less.”

Frasco, committee on Visayas development chairman, served as Cebu Port Authority commissioner and mayor of Liloan town for nine years.

He is a recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines award for public administration.

HB 7846 seeks to “regulate the funeral industry to widen their product range and rationalize their price range for caskets.”

The proposed law could benefit millions of low-income Filipino households burdened by exorbitant casket prices.

The bill “indirectly creates the product-price category of caskets for indigents.”

“As long as the caskets offered are still of good quality while also being affordable, then the casket makers and funeral parlors will still be able to make reasonable profit while serving their indigent clientele,” Frasco said.
