‘Air travellers not allowed to transport more than P50k’

The Bureau of Customs – Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Tuesday reminded air travelers that transporting money more than P50,000 are prohibited.

Violation of this rule may lead to seizure of the money and civil penalties and or criminal prosecution against the owner.

The Customs – NAIA issued the reminders a day after it presented a seized package containing US dollars equivalent to more than P300,000 from New Jersey.

The package, with 8,000 dollars in $50 and $100 bills concealed between the pages of a cooking magazine, was discovered at Federal

Express warehouse. It was misdeclared as “correspondence,” from New Jersey, USA, and consigned to a resident of San Pedro in Laguna.

In its latest advisory, the agency said that a “person may bring into or take out of the Philippines, or electronically transfer legal tender Philippine notes and coins, checks, money order and other bills of exchange in an amount not more than P50,000.”

But it added that travelers may still bring into or bring out of the Philippines an amount exceeding P50,000 as long as a prior written authorization is secured from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipina
