The Court of Appeals has denied with finality the appeal of Reynaldo Parajinog Jr. to dismiss the illegal possession of firearms charges against him.

The court’s former Special Eight Division upheld its Aug. 30, 2019 decision affirming the order by the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City denying Parojinog’s motion.

Parojinog Jr. had urged the appellate court to dismiss the case on the ground that the pieces of evidence presented against him were illegally obtained.

He is the son of Reynaldo Parojinog Sr., the Ozamiz City mayor who was killed in a police raid on July 30, 2017.

The Parajinogs were among the local officials linked by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade.

“After going over the grounds raised in the motion for reconsideration… we resolve to deny the motion,” the appellate court said in a resolution written by Associate Justice Ramon Garcia.

“Petitioner has not shown any cogent or compelling reason to warrant a reversal or even modification of the aforesaid decision.”

Court records showed that on July 21, 2017, Police Chief Insp. Garman Manabat of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group applied for a search warrant against Parojinog Jr. and the other suspects.

Based on the testimonies of Manabat and Jerson Madrigal plus documentary evidence, a court issued several search warrants against the petitioner and other individuals in Ozamis City, where illegal drugs, unlicensed firearms and explosives were confiscated.

Parojinog Jr. is now serving life at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.
