A typhoon entered the Philippine area of responsibility at 9 a.m. on Friday and was named “Kristine.”

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said “Kristine” will remain far from the Philippine landmass and may leave between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The storm is forecast to head for southern Japan and the Korean peninsula after leaving the area just outside the Philippines. It was 1,285 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon as of 3 p.m. on Friday.

“This typhoon is undergoing rapid intensification. It is forecast to reach peak intensity of around 205 to 215 kilometers per hour on Sunday,” the weather bureau said.
