Barquez, 99

Army M/Sgt. Salvador S. Barquez (ret.), former adjutant-post commandant of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines and survivor of the Death March in World War II, died in Pinili, Ilocos Norte on Saturday.

He was 99.

Barquez, born in Polangui, Albay on Oct. 30, 1920, settled in Pinili after his retirement from the Army in 1964 where his wife Eugenia (nee Cabie) was born in 1930.

A veteran of the second world war, Barquez, who  was active in veterans affairs and the senior citizens association in Pinili, is survived by his wife, their children Elena; Saturnino and Celia; Severino and Luz; Elvira and Eric Bayutas; Gloria and Rey Avante; Bonifacio and Nellie; Joseph and Alma; as well as Adela and Henry Yong; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Barquez retired on June 11, 1964 after 25 years, three months and 21 days in the service, which included working at the then headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Camp Murphy, now Camp Aguinaldo, in Quezon City.

The date of the funeral, given the lockdown in Pinili following the COVID-19 pandemic, has not been disclosed by the family with other members in Hawaii, Metro Manila and Cavite.

Barquez is the cousin-in-law of Honor Blanco Cabie, night editor of the Manila Standard.
