A party-list lawmaker on Tuesday cited the critical role of barangay health workers in the fight against Covid-19 as they are at the frontline of health care services at the barangay level.

Rep. Angelica Natasha Co of BHW Party-list hailed what she described as the heroic role of BHWs in the light of President Rodrigo Duterte’s orders for an enhanced community quarantine.

“BHWs, just like in every calamity, would be rendering assistance by monitoring the health condition of barangay folks and the possible spread of Covid-19,” Co said. BHWs would be also tapped even for food distribution,  should the situation warrants it, among other services that may be needed, she added.

With the BHWs active role in the fight against Covid-19, Rep. Co urged the LGUs to ensure the safety of the BHWs.

Co said BHWs are at high risk even as she called for immediate support for them. She said the workers will be distributing some much-needed personal protection paraphernalia, but it would not be sufficient.

President Duterte on Monday placed the entire island of Luzon on lockdown until April 12 as the number of COVID-19 to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

The announcement came after the President met with members of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, who recommended an “enhanced community quarantine” that includes strict home quarantine in all households, a suspension of public transportation, the regulation of food and essential health services, and the heightened presence of uniformed personnel.
