House Deputy Majority Leader and Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera on Sunday called on Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez to fast track the approval of her bill seeking to increase the honoraria and Christmas bonuses of barangay officials and workers.

“I appeal to the Cayetano-Romualdez House-led leadership to include in their priority the passage of my measure as compassion to our barangay officials and workers,” she said.

She filed House Bill No. 5846 seeking  to amend the Local Government Code of 1991 or Republic Act No. 7160 for such purpose.

Under the proposal, a punong barangay shall receive honoraria not less than P10,000 a month, while barangay members would get P8,000.

Moreover, they shall also be entitled to higher Christmas bonus of not less than P3,000 each.

“Barangay workers currently receive small compensation and honoraria that are inadequate for their families’ needs. They do not enjoy much benefits from performing their mandate of addressing day-to-day issues of their communities. It is only apt to revise the core law that

provides for the benefits of barangay workers,” the party-list lawmaker said.
