MPD officer shot dead in Malate

A police officer from the Manila Police District was shot dead by a gunman inside the restaurant owned by his brother in Malate, Manila.

The victim was identified by MPD Station 9 Commander Lt. Col. Samuel Pabonito as Police Staff Sgt. Roel Orihuela.

The victim was rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila but died upon arrival.

Orihuela was watching TV inside the restaurant located on Arellano Avenue corner Don Pedro Street in Malate, Manila around 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Based on an initial investigation, two suspects onboard a motorcycle stopped in front of the restaurant. One the suspects, armed with a gun,  entered the establishment, approached Orihuela and shot him.

A sibling of the victim said the suspects were wearing bonnets and their faces were covered.

The family said Orihuela did not have enemies and they did not know if he received death threats.

Orihuela just spent a few days with his brother and had received a directive to report to Camp Crame.

Orihuela is a member of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force and is assigned in Mindanao.
