The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is ready to implement President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to establish a national task force addressing the needs of communities affected by the recent Kanlaon volcano eruption.
The task force will involve key government agencies and local units, focusing on a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the affected areas.
At a briefing in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, President Marcos tasked the OCD with leading the task force and called for the construction of permanent evacuation centers for displaced residents.
OCD Administrator USec. Ariel F. Nepomuceno affirmed the agency’s commitment, stating that the safety of citizens is their top priority. He noted the OCD has been monitoring the eruption closely and is prepared to mobilize resources to support affected residents through a whole-of-government approach. Rex Espiritu
Nepomuceno also highlighted the efforts of the Regional Task Force Kanlaon, led by OCD regional directors, in finding solutions for the affected communities. The focus will be on providing immediate assistance and ensuring long-term recovery, including the construction of evacuation centers outside the six-kilometer danger zone.
Currently, 2,660 families (8,509 individuals) are sheltered in 23 evacuation centers across Western and Central Visayas.
