The inauguration of a new runway in Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is just a “snapshot” of the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Thursday, noting the plan to upgrade 15 more airports nationwide.

“It’s only a snapshot of all the exciting things that are happening in our airport infrastructure. It is part of our broader vision to advance the development of our country’s infrastructure,” Mr. Marcos said during the inauguration of the MCIA alternate runway in Lapu-Lapu City.

Mr. Marcos noted that the Aviation Infrastructure Program will get P7.7 billion this year for the upgrade of 15 airports nationwide.

He said the government aims to modernize facilities, improve connectivity, and acquire state-of-the-art navigational equipment.

“Through this program, we can construct, rehabilitate, and enhance runways, taxiways, ramps, control towers, passenger terminals, while at the same time acquiring state-of-the-art navigational equipment,” Mr. Marcos said.

The President said the new MCIA runway, the first and only parallel runway in the Philippines, is a “bold leap forward” as it would help improve Cebu province’s competitiveness, connectivity, and capacity to take in visitors.

The alternate runway is a 2.56-km. infrastructure project designed to meet increasing air traffic demand and accommodate passenger and cargo volumes, ensuring uninterrupted airport operations during emergencies, maintenance and runway closures.

Recently, the MCIA Authority reported a remarkable milestone in 2024, as the airport surpassed 11.3 million passengers, marking a 13-percent growth in domestic travelers and a 12-percent increase in international passengers.

Mr. Marcos emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) in implementing airport projects.

He said the flagship PPP projects are crucial in developing the country’s gateways, noting that the signed concession agreements for the Bohol-Panglao International Airport and Laguindingan International Airport PPP projects aim to increase passenger capacity and improve facilities.
