LTO drive vs. traffic violators nets 18,000

More than 18,000 motorists have been apprehended in Metro Manila over the first six months of 2024, according to the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

The LTO-National Capital Region attributed the apprehensions of 18,025 drivers to its intensified campaign against traffic violators.

LTO  regional director Roque Verzosa III said the number of apprehended drivers in the first half of 2024 saw a significant increase of 124.5 percent compared to the same period in 2023 with only 8,028 apprehensions.

Out of the 18,025 apprehended motorists, 7,989 were cited for violation of Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, including 1,227 cases of unregistered motor vehicles in line with the no-registration, no-travel policy.

The largest group of violators totalling 2,412, were caught for driving vehicles with defective accessories, devices, equipment or parts. 

Other notable violations included driving while wearing slippers (1,227), failure to carry official receipt/registration receipt (789), reckless driving (670), driving without a valid license (360), obstruction (231) and disregarding traffic signs (227).

Some 3,707 motorists were apprehended for not using seat belt devices in violation of RA 8750, while 1,699 motorists faced penalties for not wearing the standard protective motorcycle helmet under RA 10054, 64 for non-compliance with the Children Safety on Motorcycle law under RA 10666), 23 for violations of the Anti-Distracted Driving Act or RA 10913, and one for driving under the influence of prohibited drugs under RA 10586.
