Daily COVID-19 case average drops 22%, 9,107 sick last week

The country’s daily average of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases decreased by 22 percent from May 29 to June 4, the Department of Health reported Monday, even as it tallied 9,107 COVID-19 cases last week.

In its latest case bulletin, the DOH recorded 1,301 daily infections, a 366-case decrease from the 1,667 recorded between May 22 to 28.

The tally of severe and critical infections increased to 559 from the previous week’s 554.

Ten deaths were verified during the past week with three of them occurring from May 22 to June 4.

Only 18.9 percent or 397 out of the 2,099 intensive care unit (ICU) beds are in use, while 23 percent or 4,101 of 17,848 non-ICU beds are utilized.

At least 78,443,972 or 100.4 percent of the country’s target population (78,100,578) have been vaccinated against Covid-19, including 82.16 percent of 8,721,357 senior citizens, as of March 19.

A total of 23,811,248 have received booster shots out of the fully vaccinated population.

To date, the country has logged 4,148,401 million COVID-19 cases and 66,476 deaths since January 2020.

From May 29 to June 4, an average of 1,301 daily infections were logged in the country, which is 22 percent lower compared to the previous week.

This is the 12th straight week that the number of weekly cases is above 1,000, according to the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group.

Of the latest infections, some 77 cases were considered severe or critical, the DOH’s latest case bulletin showed.

This is 1 percent higher than the previous week, or 5 admissions more than last week’s 554 cases, ABS-CBN IRG added.

As of Sunday, a total of 559 cases or 10.6 percent of total COVID-19 admissions were in severe and critical condition, the agency added.

At least 397 or 18.9 percent of intensive care unit beds for COVID patients were occupied. The non-ICU bed utilization rate was at 23 percent.

During the past week, some 10 deaths were verified by the DOH.

Based on the DOH’s tracker, the Philippines has 13,808 active COVID-19 cases as of June 4.

Three years since the pandemic broke out, some 4.1 million coronavirus infections were recorded in the country. At least 66,476 people have succumbed to the virus.
