Marcos appoints Gaerlan as new deputy chief of staff of the AFP

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Marine Commandant Maj. Gen. Charlton Sean Gaerlan as the new deputy chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO), in a social media post, said Gaerlan’s appointment was effective on Mar. 21, 2023.

Gaerlan served as the Philippine Marine Corps commandant and head of the AFP Education, Training and Doctrine Command. He was also a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Makatao” Class of 1989, the PCO said.

Gaerlan also served as deputy commander of the 2nd Marine Brigade; deputy commander for marine operations of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao; Inspector General of the Philippine Marine Corps; and commander of the 3rd Marine Brigade in Western Command, Palawan.

Gaerlan replaced AFP Inspector General Lt. Gen William Gonzales who was the designated acting deputy chief of staff of the AFP following the retirement of Vice Admiral Rommel Anthony Reyes last March 15.
