Six suspected communist rebels were killed yesterday in a clash with Army troopers in Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The AFP, in a statement, said the soldiers also confiscated six firearms following the skirmishes.

The Army’s elements of the 94th Infantry Battalion responded to information that the rebels were extorting food and other supplies from residents of Barangay Carabalan.

The responding troops encountered at least 20 New People’s Army (NPA) members resulting in the gunbattle that left six of the rebels killed.

Seized after the encounter were six high-powered firearms consisting of 2 M16 rifles, 2 M203 grenade launchers, and 2 AK47 rifles.
