Special polls eyed for Cavite 7th district

Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair George Garcia said the poll regulator is hoping to conduct the special elections in Cavite’s 7th Congressional District to fill the seat vacated by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla early next year,

“We are hoping to hold that in the early part of next year and of course we are going to spend money as regards to the conduct of this election,” Garcia said in an interview on ANC.

Garcia mentioned this after he appealed to Congress to temporarily hold the approval of bills that may require plebiscite as this may affect their preparations for the 2025 midterm polls, GMA News reported.

“We’re hoping that in the meantime, there should be a pause for the creation of provinces, naming of the barangays, because the Comelec is preparing for not only the barangay and SK elections but likewise for the very big election of 2025,” Garcia, quoted in the report, said.

In July, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling on the Comelec to conduct a special election in the seventh district of Cavite after Remulla, the elected congressman in the said locality, was appointed Justice secretary.

In August, the Comelec said it is still waiting for the official communication from the House of Representatives before preparing for the special polls in the said district.

In conducting a special election, Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco earlier said the poll body will be implementing timelines for certain activities, similar to what they do in regular elections, such as the filing of certificate of candidacies and a short campaign period, among others.
