Duterte asked to urgently sign solo parents’ law

Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas on Tuesday urged Malacañang to urgently sign the Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act “to enable struggling solo parents to immediately benefit from the measure.”

Brosas  said the measure grants additional benefits for solo parents.

“This is much needed amid rising prices of basic goods, such as the P1,000 monthly subsidy and 10 percent discount and VAT exemption for the baby’s basic needs such as milk, supplements and medicines,” Brosas said.

“It’s about time that we give the breather which solo parents have been pushing for the long time. During the pandemic, they were among those who were neglected in the government’s social amelioration programs,” she added.

Under the soon-to-be-signed law, scholarship programs for children of solo parents and prioritization in the hiring of solo parents, especially solo mothers, are provided for.

Gabriela Partylist has been pushing for the amendments to RA 8972 or the Solo Parents Welfare Act for years.

In the 18th Congress, the partylist filed the measure as HB 478 which is part of its top ten priority legislative measures.
