Sen. Cynthia A. Villar on Monday led the observance of Women’s Month in her hometown Las Pinas City by planting vegetables.

The senator, chairperson of the Senate committee on Agriculture and Food, was joined by officers and members of Kapisanan ng mga Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) of Barangay Pilar, and the officers of various homeowners associations and senior citizens groups in Las Pinas, among others.

The gardening event, entitled “Wastong Pagtatanim ng Gulay Para sa Mga Ilaw ng Tahanan,” was held in an open space in Camella Homes Classic in Barangay Pilar.

It was held together with the senator’s training partner on urban gardening- Melanie Cruz, Technical Training Specialist of East West Seeds Foundation.

Some 100 women participated in the hands-on and lecture activity to boost food production. Topics included health and nutrition, rights of children and budget management.

In her speech, Villar cited the need for everyone to find ways to lower daily expenses especially in light of the runaway gasoline prices.

“Planting vegetables and maintaining community gardens are ways to save on our expenses while giving nutritious foods to our loved ones,” she said.

She also cited the need for industry and determination coupled with resourcefulness to cope up with the difficult times.

The senator said March was being celebrated as Women’s Month in order to acknowledge the important role of women in the family and their significant contributions to nation-building.
