The Commission on Elections has received more than 100,000 applications during the first week of the voter registration period which started Aug. 1, 2019.

In a statement, the Comelec said it received a total 100,399 applications nationwide since it opened the voter registration on Aug. 1.

The voter registration was opened ahead of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections scheduled on May 11, 2020.

Of the number of registrants, 92,292 applications came from regular voters, or those who are 18 years old and above, while 8,107 were received from SK registrants with ages 15 to 17 years old, Comelec said.

The Comelec said Calabarzon had the highest turnout for regular voters with 19,651, while Visayas received the most number of SK registrants at 1,043.

It said also observed that there were more female applicants with 55,975 compared to the number of male applications, which is at 44,424.

Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez welcomed the turnout and expects more will still register in the coming days once it is ascertained that the May 2020 polls will be pushing through.

“The turnout seems to be good and huge, largely from the youth. There are more youths filing applications,” he said.

The voter registration will run until Sept. 30, 2019, the Comelec said.

Applications will be accepted from Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays, the Comelec added.
