The Presidential Commission on Urban Poor and Grab Philippines have partnered to offer new jobs for at least 10,000 car, taxi, motorcycle, and bike drivers to ease urban poverty not only in Metro Manila but also in the provinces.

Alvin Feliciano, PCUP chairperson and chief executive officer, said the partnership would provide “meaningful livelihood opportunities” to 10,000 drivers from at least 10,000 potential drivers, motor urban poor communities in the National Capital Region.

He said he and Grab Philippines president Brian Cu, along with country advisor Chris Taylor and PCUP Commissioner Melvin Mitra, were set to enter into a memorandum of agreement on Aug. 7 in a bid to launch a series of nationwide job caravans.

“As we continue to grow, offer new services, and delight more customers, we are humbled that we are in a rather unique position to influence inclusive growth across multiple sectors, and do our part to ease poverty in the urban communities of the Philippines,” Cu told Feliciano in a meeting.

“Grab has always committed itself to champion the best interests of the Filipino people through our platform and the opportunities that come with our growth. Every Filipino’s success is a success for Grab,” he added.

Feliciano said the job caravans would cover the metro and even cities outside it, Baguio City, Pampanga, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao City, and Cagayan de Oro.

“Performing partners from PCUP-endorsed communities will be incentivized.  The price of success is hard work—and with Grab, the perseverance of our partners is always being reciprocated,” Cu said.

Feliciano thanked Grab Philippines for its corporate social responsibility to create alternative livelihood opportunities to the poor.

“This endeavor is such a big step to help the poor improve their lives,” he said.

He cited PCUP’s “successful” one-stop-shop caravan, where residents from urban poor communities could process documents and choose prospective employers or livelihood partners from the private sector.

The caravan shall applicants to process their birth certificates, National Bureau of Investigation clearances and other requirements needed for job application.
