‘Foreigners must follow our laws’

“No superpower in Manila,” these were the words uttered by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno who wanted a Chinese national deported immediately for allegedly urinating in public and assaulting a barangay tanod.

Moreno said “foreigners, whether you’re  from a superpower country,” apparently alluding to to China, according to observers, “must simply follow rules in Manila.”

The Manila mayor said he would ask the Bureau of Immigration to deport the Chinese man, who is now detained, for peeing on a wall and for assaulting a tanod.

“When a barangay tanod tried to stop him, the man reportedly got angry and physically assaulted the tanod,” Moreno told reporters.

“If you hit our enforcer, attempt to hurt our policemen because you are a superpower, you are not welcome in Manila,” Moreno said.

“It is immaterial what country you come from. If you go to Manila, follow simple rules. And I think that is a generally accepted rule that you don’t pee in the streets. You will be arrested because it is prohibited,” he said.

The case was similar to a Chinese woman who threw “taho” at a police officer who refused her entry in line with the ban on liquids in the Metro Rail Transit.

He said petty crimes in Manila had gone down following his campaign to clear the city’s streets and sidewalks of obstructions.

Moreno also  ordered the Manila Police District to go after “wanted” persons facing arrest but hiding in Manila.

Moreno ordered  MPD chief Police Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. to hunt down criminals using Manila as their sanctuary, saying “don’t let Manila the haven for criminals because it’s an insult to the eyes of the law and justice.”

Earlier, the MPD arrested two wanted persons who have been hiding in Manila for years, Moreno said.

The two—one of them a suspected rapist who was the subject of an arrest warrant in 2015—were presented to the media.
