Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo on Monday launched the free Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet services in a tricycle station along Commonwealth Avenue in a bid to ensure that ordinary residents will have access to better communication, which he said, "plays a major role to development."
Castelo, chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Metro Manila Development, was joined by key officials of the Quezon city during the launching of the project at Don Antonio Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association in Brgy. Holy Spirit, Quezon City in partnership with Airlight Technology Solutions Inc. president Leo San Miguel.
“There is a direct correlation between the strength of the Wi-Fi to the development of a city. We need to provide a strong information technology infrastructure like in Tokyo and Singapore. Providing free Wi-Fi, especially to ordinary people will empower our people and fast-track the development of our city,” Castelo told the crowd during the project launching held at McDonald’s Ever Commonwealth branch. Castelo is running for councilor in the second district of Quezon City.
Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, a mayoralty candidate; Quezon City Councilors Gian Sotto, who is running for vice mayor; and Precious Hipolito Castelo, wife of Castelo who is running for the second congressional district of Quezon City; San Miguel, among others attended the event.
“The people will be connected and have a better communication with their loved ones and friends,” said Castelo, who was the architect behind the land distribution for the poor residents in his district, on the pilot project which would allow 30-minute free Wi-Fi access everyday to every subscriber. Castelo said the Airlight Technology Solutions Inc. is a technology company that provides strategic business and technical guidance from network deployment, broadband services to content distribution.
