Women urged to join job fair

The city government of Makati urged women residents to participate in the job fair and other activities on Sunday at the City Hall Quadrangle to mark the culmination of Women’s Month celebration.

Mayor Abigail Binay said the event would be a whole day of fun-filled activities designed to give joy and empowerment to all women of Makati in recognition of their indispensable role in the progress of the city and of society as a whole.

“I am encouraging all women Makatizens to come and participate in the activities the city has prepared for them. Come on Sunday and avail yourselves of opportunities to be healthier, financially independent, or simply relax and enjoy some pampering, free of charge,” she said.

The city chief executive said free medical services, such as anemia screening, free vaccination for pneumonia, Japanese encephalitis and cervical cancer, would also be made available during the event through the Makati Health Department.

Binay also called on women among some 2,376 registered solo parents in the city who are in need of a job to participate and take advantage of the job fair.

She said having a job would not only help them in raising their children but will also empower them to become better versions of themselves.

Spearheaded by the Women’s Welfare Section of the Makati Social Welfare Department, the series of activities on Sunday will be held from 6 a.m up to 3 p.m. at the City Hall Quadrangle.

MSWD chief Maribel Lumang said the celebration, themed “We Make Change Work for Women,” will start with a Zumba Dance Fitness activity at 6am and will be followed by a job fair, free medical services, free massage and beauty care provision, games and learning sessions, and processing of new applications for Makati Health Program (Yellow Card) and Philhealth ng Masa Program.

Lumang said the job fair, in coordination with the Makati-Public Employment and Services Office will start at 8 a.m. until 12 noon. Participating companies include Burlington Industries, New Weather Forces Group Inc., Lay Bare Waxing, Mirof Resources Inc., Fineco Management Corp., McDonald’s, Q2 HR Solutions, Elixer Multipurpose Cooperative, Goldilocks Bakeshop, and SM Supplies Station.

Jobseekers are advised to bring relevant documents such as resume with ID pictures, birth certificate, and barangay clearance.

Aside from cooking demonstration and leadership training, learning sessions covering the following topics will also be conducted: Basic self defense; Dr. Mom (first aid lessons); SAKUNAlisto (disaster preparedness); Bigay Tamang Gabay (parenting session that will focus on the Curfew Ordinance); Financial Literacy; and Entrepreneurship.

Women Makatizens who will apply for Yellow Card must bring the following documents: birth certificate, barangay clearance, family picture, latest Comelec certificate and PhilHealth ID or Member Data Record.

Those who will apply for PhilHealth ng Masa should bring their Barangay Certificate of Indigency, latest Comelec certificate, MDR or Request Form with a “No Record” note, birth certificate or marriage certificate and birth certificate of dependents.

Under the administration of Mayor Binay, the city government has actively promoted women empowerment through making social services highly accessible, especially to women and yong girls in difficult circumstances.

The city’s Social Development Center has acquired 1st Level Accreditation as a Residential Care Facility from the Department of Social Welfare and Development on Aug. 16, 2018, for meeting the first level standards in the implementation of Residential-Based Programs and Services for Children and Youth.

In a letter to Lumang, the DSWD stated that the SDC has complied with the previous findings/recommendations in Case Management, Helping Strategies, and Physical Structure.

The SDC in Barasoain Street, Barangay Tejeros, was established in 2003. It serves as temporary shelter most especially for girls considered as children in need of special protection such as those who are victims of abuse. 

At present, the residential facility has 65 clients under its care, 46 girls and 19 boys.
