‘Monolithic dome’ built in Cagayan Province town

The town of Iguig in Cagayan Province became the recipient of the first-ever typhoon resilient monolithic dome in the country.

TYPHOON-RESILIENT DOME. Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol led the inauguration and commissioning of the first-ever typhoon-resilient monolithic dome in the country. Piñol, in his social media account, said that the Dome, which was designed by German engineers and constructed by a Filipino company, will serve as a grains warehouse in the agency’s experimental station in the town of Iguig in Cagayan province. No less than Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol inaugurated and commissioned the facility on Wednesday (March 27), who later explained in his social media account that the Dome will serve as a grains warehouse in the DA’s experimental station in the province.

According to Piñol, the Dome was designed by German engineers and constructed by a Filipino company with the help of Polish consultants.

Piñol also testified to its durability, saying that the monolithic structure could withstand strong tropical cyclone warning signal, up to No. 5.

He added that the Dome has insulators that deflect the heat of the sun and keeps the interior temperature at a level that is ideal for grain storage.

The DA secretary said that a single dome costs P10 million and the agency will build a total of eight in Cagayan Region which suffers devastation from at least 10 typhoons every year.

He added that seven smaller units of the dome which costs P5 million each are now being constructed for the use of a  farmers’ group in Cagayan Valley Region.

After Cagayan Province, the DA also plans to build similar structures in other areas located on the typhoon track such as Eastern and Western Visayas, Bicol, Southern Tagalog including Mindoro, Central Luzon, Ilocos, and Cordillera Regions.
