River warriors on cleanup drive

Amid the torrential rains brought by Tropical Storm “Domeng,” personnel of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission have been continuously cleaning up creeks and rivers in the metropolis.

Despite the bad weather caused by Domeng, the River Warriors and Task Force Flood Control of PRRC were determined to continue with their cleanup operations, the PRRC said in a statement.

Among the creeks cleaned up by PRRC were Estero de Aviles and Estero de San Miguel in the City of Manila.

According to PRRC executive director Jose Antonio Goitia, their staff did not stop cleaning the esteros and rivers to prevent flooding due to unpredictable weather.

“In order to avoid the unpleasant circumstances caused by Typhoon Domeng, our River Warriors have made sure that our esteros and rivers are free of wastes,” Goitia said.

Following Typhoon Domeng, Estero de Aviles and Estero de San Miguel remained clean so flooding was prevented, it said.

Apart from this, River Warriors also temporarily removed the phytoremediation plants, installed by PRRC’s Environmental Management Division in the esteros so as not to break down by the storm.

This is a plant that helps clean air, water and soil contaminated by hazardous chemicals.

With this, Goitia called on the public to cooperate with the PRRC in keeping the rivers clean so that flooding would be avoided during the rainy season.

“We all know that the main cause of flooding is the clogging of garbage dumped in the waterways, hopefully our people will avoid throwing garbage anywhere,” Goitia said.
