A Norwegian fugitive wanted for killing his own brother two years ago in Olso, Norway,  was arrested by Immigration authorities in Laguna, according to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morenta.

Helge Stensland, ranged against a corner at his house in Sta. Cruz Laguna, was being sought by Norwegian police for the death of his brother, Audun, whom he allegedly stabbed to death inside his home in the town of Hellvik in southwestern Norway on Oct. 16, 2016.

Stensland fled to Manila last April 11, three months after a Norwegian court sentenced him to seven years in prison for homicide.

Aside from his jail sentence, Stensland was also ordered by Norwegian authorities to pay his victim’s widow and his four children more than 1.7 million Norwgian Krones (US$220,000) in damages, Morente said.

According to BI-Fugitive and Search Unit Chief Bobby Raquepo, Stensland had been frequenting the Philippines for the past two decades as he was married to a Filipina with whom he has two children.

Stensland’s crime was ruled as a homicide as the court held that he did not intend to kill his brother when he stabbed him during the incident.

Reports said the siblings had just arrived at Stensland’s home from a party, when they had an altercation and a fistfight.

Stensland allegedly got hold of  a knife and stabbed his brother once in the chest, hitting the latter’s heart that led to his death.

The suspect invoked self-defense as the cause of his brother’s death, although prosecutors charged that he should be held liable for murder.

His case was under appeal and was scheduled for hearing when authorities learned that Stensland and his family had disappeared and had fled to the Philippines.
