Legacy carrier Philippine Airlines has announced it will operate international flights out of Cebu from the newly constructed state-of the-art passenger terminal facility of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA – Terminal 2) beginning June 22.

To depart from the MCIA T2 in Lapu Lapu City are PAL flights from Cebu to Bangkok (daily), Beijing (once-a-week), Chengdu (once-a-week), Nagoya (thrice weekly), Osaka (daily), Seoul (Incheon) (daily) and Tokyo Narita (twice daily).

As of May 7, the construction of the MCIA passenger terminal building was 98.10 percent complete.

GMR Megawide, the builder and operator of MCIA T2, is currently completing the construction of the terminal building which expects to serve 11.2-million passengers annually.

The area spans 45,000 square meters with a 2-level forecourt segregating arrivals and departures with 48 check–in counters.

The facility has seven passenger boarding bridges which can be expanded to 12 for both wide and narrow-body aircraft. It will be connected by a link-bridge to Terminal 1, which will be refurbished for domestic use.

PAL corporate communications chief and spokesperson Ma. Cielo Villaluna said all domestic flights would continue to operate at MCIA Terminal 1: These are commercial flights to and from Bacolod, Busuanga, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Caticlan, Camiguin, Davao, General Santos, Iloilo, Kalibo, Legazpi, Ozamiz, Puerto Princesa, Siargao, Surigao and Tacloban.

She said the airline management was now in close coordination with officials of GMR Megawide for the orderly transfer of international flight operations to the new facility.

“PAL views the new terminal as a positive development which will strengthen Cebu’s position as one of the country’s major hubs and as a major boost to the travel and tourism industry,” said Villaluna in her Facebook account.

The Department of Transportation earlier announced that the construction of MCIA T2 is on track for its formal opening next month.

It stated that the terminal building would have a capacity of about 13 million passengers annually and cater to both domestic and international operations.

In December 2013, the GMR Megawide Consortium won a 25-year concession agreement that involved the renovation of Terminal 1 of Mactan Cebu airport and the design, financing, construction and operation of a second terminal.

It submitted the highest bid of P14.4 billion.
