The “violent and arrogant” kings mentioned in the homily of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle during the observance of Palm Sunday was not meant for President Rodrigo Duterte but to other world leaders, according to a Malacañang official.

In defending the President, Chief Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said he was very sure the Catholic leader was referring to world leaders not from this country who wields power to abuse the people.

“I don’t think this administration feels alluded to or the leaders in this administration. Because I think the actions of this administration speak for themselves,” Panelo said in a statement.

The Manila Cardinal on Sunday decried the “reign” of arrogant “kings” who employ violence and resort to threats and yet are followed by throngs.

In his homily during the Palm Sunday at the Manila Cathedral, Cardinal Tagle appealed to the all the Catholic faithful to reflect on their “true” king.
