Urduja fatalities go up to 41

The number of persons killed during the height of tropical storm Uduja has gone up to 41.

Currently, 67 persons remain unaccounted for.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released these figures in a briefing.

While it has placed the death toll at 41, NDRRMC Spokesperson Romina Marasigan says, these reports from the ground are still subject for verification.

Most of the victims were from Regions 5, 7 and Compostela Valley.

45 persons are missing and 67 were wounded.

In Biliran, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) Officer Sofronio Dacillo says, Urduja claimed the lives of 33 persons in the island.

Most of them were either hit by landslides or swept by raging floodwaters.  

10 of the bodies have been recovered while rescuers are conducting search and retrieval operations for the rest of the victims, many of them already presumed dead.

The NDRRMC also estimates the damage brought by Urduja to infrastructure at P 543 million.

The agency expects these numbers to go up as they gather more data from the calamity areas.
