Senate continues probe on P 6.4B drug shipment

The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee is continuing its investigation into the shipment of P6.4-billion worth illegal drugs from China that went past the green lane of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) last May.

Committee Chairman Richard Gordon and Senator Panfilo Lacson stressed that manual transactions for shipments at the Customs must be eliminated.

This is to prevent the rampant corruption and bribery activities at BOC.

Lacson said in Singapore, a shipper just pays for the shipment in banks.

"How can you eliminate human interaction? Sa Singapore, magbabayad ka lang sa bangko (you will just pay in banks). All transactions are computerized," he noted.

The lawmakers suggested that licensed customs may enforce a tagging system.

Lacson said legitimate brokers may wear large identification cards (IDs).

Gordon brought up the idea of color-coded uniforms at BOC.

He said that in some offices, the nature of employees' work may be identified by the color of their attire.
