Repairs of facilities in Pag-asa island have started.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana gave this information during a press briefing in Malacanang on Friday.

Lorenzana says, the project will go on for a year and a half.

Last month, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Eduardo Ano maintained the renovations do not violate the code of conduct in the disputed waters.

"You can upgrade the islands, reefs and shoals that you are presently occupying," he explained.

He was reacting to China's statement that the construction activities in Pag-asa island are illegal.

Pag-asa is part of the Kalayaan group of islands or the so-called Spratlys.

It is located 480 kilometers west of Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.
