Comelec urges Congress to decide on brgy., SK elections

The Commission on Elections on Monday said it will continue to prepare for the forthcoming village and Sangguniang Kabataan elections scheduled this coming October despite  Congress’ reluctance to push through with the elections.

Comelec chairman Andres Bautista said they did not suspend all election preparation activities, including biddings and procurement of equipment  in connection with the 2017 barangay and SK elections because there was no bill yet that would postpone the local elections.

However, the Comelec chief appealed to lawmakers to inform the poll body by July at the latest if the polls would push through or not, saying this would prevent the government from wasting the funds for the barangay and SK elections.

The Comelec said it temporarily suspended the printing of 80 million election ballots as they are still awaiting the final decision of Congress, but has continued to conduct biddings and procurement of election materials such as corrugated boxes for election ballots, envelopes and billboards, among others.

This is the second time in two years that lawmakers have been asked to postpone the barangay elections, following a law deferring last year’s barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls to  2017.

In a radio interview, Bautista said they are still awaiting Congress’ action if the elections will push through.

While the elections would be conducted manually, Bautista said it would be better to postpone but not to reschedule it before the May 2019 mid-term elections. “The Comelec is ready for the elections” he added.
