DND to see if martial law in Mindanao should be extended

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana needs two weeks to be able to make an assessment on whether or not he will recommend to President Rodrigo Duterte an extension of the martial law in Mindanao.

Lorenzana is referring to the declaration of martial law in Mindanao which is in effect for 60 days or two months.

Duterte put Mindanao under martial law last May 23, 2017 through Proclamation Number 216 which he signed while he was in Russia.

Lorenzana says, “we still have one month” before the effectivity of martial law expires.

The defense secretary made these remarks during the ‘Mindanao Hour’ press briefing in the palace.

Lorenzana has also expressed hope the Abu Sayyaf group (ASG) will be exterminated this month.

“Hopefully, we will be able to finish off the Abu Sayyaf,” he said.

“Don’t forget, aside from the Abu Sayyaf in Marawi City, they are still in existence in Sulu and Basilan,” he told newsmen.

The military believes, ASG leader Isnilon Hapilon is still in Marawi City.
