Government troops have recovered money worth a total of P 79 million from their clearing operations in Marawi City where they are fighting the Maute group.

P 27 million are in some thirty pieces of checks and P 52 million are in cash.

Some of the funds were found in a vault inside a house in Barangay Mapandi that was heavily defended by the Maute terrorist group.

These pieces of information were revealed in a press conference by the Philippine Marines on Tuesday at the Provincial Capitol of Lanao del Sur located in Marawi City.

The military believes, this discovery is proof that the Maute group is well-organized and well-funded and is possibly aided by some international terrorist groups.

Military officers doubt if the money belonged to residents of Marawi who fled the city as clashes escalated.

They said that residents would likely bring their money with them as they fled from their homes.

The Armed Forces  of the Philippines (AFP) will conduct an investigation to find out the source of the funds found from the positions taken by the Maute terrorist as they battled with government forces in Mapandi.
