The Deparment of Education (DepEd) reports that the opening of classes for many schools across the country has been generally smooth on Monday.

DepEd estimates about 27 million students went to school today.

The department, however, admits the current huge shortage in classrooms.

DepEd Undersecretary Alain del Pascua says, more than 107,000 classrooms are needed to be built all over the country, but so far, only 50,000 have just been recently constructed.

He notes, in Metro Manila alone, there exists a classroom shortage of about 8,000.

He cites lack of space as among the reasons.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones observed the opening of school classes at President Corazon Aquino High School in Baseco Compound, Manila on Monday.
