MOTORCYCLE-riding gunmen shot dead Thursday one of the respondents in the multi-million car rental scam outside her house in Sta Rosa, Laguna, police said.

In a report, Sr. Supt. Joel Pernito, Police Provincial Director of Laguna, said Eleanor Rosales, 58, and resident of Brgy. Malusak, died from a close range shot by two unidentified assailants in mid-afternoon.

Pernito said Rosales sustained several wounds from a caliber .9mm pistol.

Rosales, along with Tycicus Historillo Nambio, Jhennelyn Berroya, Anastacia Montes Cauyan, Eliseo Cortes, Marilou Cruz and Sabinna Torrea are respondents in the unprecedented estafa case filed by 1,800 car owners in a car rental business.

The group reportedly raked in millions of pesos among car owners whose vehicles were eventually used as collateral for loans from lending firms.

Investigation on the car rental scam started in early April after counter affidavits had been completed and submitted by the respondents in line with the directive of the Department of Justice last March 31 in reply to the 25 complaints for large scale estafa filed by private complainants through the Philippine National Police’s Highway Patrol Group in Calabarzon.

Initial investigation revealed the victim had just attended a court hearing relating to the estafa case filed against her and was on her way home when the incident occurred.

Rosales, upon arriving home, called her housemaid to open the locked gate of the house when one of the suspects on board a Suzuki MC without license plate alighted and shot the victim dead.

Reports said the suspects hurriedly fled towards the direction of B. Saballa St. heading towards Garden Villas in Malusak.

Pernito said the shooting incident was caught by a CCTV installed near the crime scene.

Probers are reviewing the footages in hopes they would be able tyo identify the assailants.

CCTV footages showed one of the suspects (back rider) was wearing a blue jacket, bull cap, face mask and short pants and about 35 years old while the driver of the motorcycle was sporting a combination of black and white jacket in a maroon helmet, and at least 5’7” in height.
