A bill seeking to postpone elections for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) has been filed at the House of Representatives.

Surigao del Norte Congressman Robert Ace Barbers has filed House Bill 5359 seeking to reset the polls to May 5, 2020 or over three years from now.

The current law mandates the COMELEC to hold the elections on October 31 this year.

In August last year, Barbers had  expressed the urgency to reset the barangay and SK elections, citing the expenses the poll body was already incurring in the printing of ballots.

“It would be a complete waste of government funds if they continue with the printing and then Congress later decides to defer the elections,” he had said.

The lawmaker believes the postponement of polls will give Congress time to shift the form of government to federal system.

He says, this goal may be accomplished within two years through a plebiscite.
