BIR sues Mighty Corporation for alleged tax evasion

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has filed a tax evasion case against the country’s oldest cigarette company, Mighty Corporation.

The agency filed the complaint on Wednesday at the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The case is in connection with the raid led by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the firm’s warehouses in Pampanga and General Santos City on March 1, 2017.

These operations supposedly resulted in the discovery of about P 2 billion worth of cigarettes with fake tax stamps.

Mighty Corporation, however, said BIR’s malfunctioning devices led to the wrong conclusion that the cigarettes had bogus stamps.

Last March 7, President Rodrigo Duterte had ordered the arrest of Mighty Corporation President Alex Wongchuking for economic sabotage stemming from his company’s alleged use of counterfeit stamps.
