De Lima’s lawyers assail court’s arrest warrant & detention order

The counsels of Senator Leila De Lima held a press conference on Monday morning to stress a supposed error in the issuance of the arrest warrant against the senator.

Attorneys Alex Padilla and Phillip Sawali say, the case of illegal drug trading filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) lacks substance.

Padilla cites as example the absence of any information on the bulk or amount of drugs allegedly sold.

They also say, no one among the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) convicts, who supposedly facilitated the drug trade, was named respondents in the charge sheet.

The lawyers suspect, the case was just upgraded to illegal drug trading to make it non-bailable.

Padilla and Sawali maintain that it is the Ombudsman and the Sandiganbayan that have jurisdiction over the case, and not the sala of Muntinlupa Branch 204 Judge Juanita Guerrero.

Padilla and Sawali criticize the continued detention of De Lima at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.
