The Caloocan City police on Tuesday night rescued 35 female workers, mostly from Mindanao, who were promised jobs abroad but were held by their agent Joseline Joy Francisco Banoga.

Police arrested Jaybert Santos, 47, the son of the suspect, and caretaker Romuli Almadin, 51. Banoga remains at large.

City police commander Senior Supt. Johnson Almazan said the girls were freed from the Joseline International Manpower Corp. whose office is at 51 Tawilis St., Kaunlaran Village, Caloocan.

According to Supt. Ferdie del Rosario, deputy chief for operations, they received a news report from a concerned media man who claimed that more or less 80 girls were being held against their will at the said agency.

Immediately, the police in coordination with the personnel from the city social welfare and development office conducted the raid.

Investigators found that the girls’ passports and cellular phones were confiscated. The girls’ movements inside the recruitment’s holding area were also monitored, according to one of the girls.

They said they were not allowed to go out of the recruitment office since they were billeted there.

To their dismay, the jobs promised them did not materialize.

Almazan said that if the agency is found to be illegal, the owner will be charged with human trafficking.
