CPR training for students pushed

High  school students trained on  the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation  can help save lives,  basketball coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao said on Tuesday.

At a news conference organized by the Philippine Heart Association at Annabel’s in Quezon City, Guiao said not only athletes and other sporty people would stand to benefit if House Bill 5891 he had authored in the last Congress would be looked into.

“Anybody of us will benefit. This is our main purpose why we are pushing for the bill’s passage,” he said.

The active involvement of senior high school students is a force multiplier outside and inside their homes in saving countless number of lives, he said.

Guiao, former Pampanga’s District 1 representative, authored HB 5891 or “An Act requiring K-12 High School Students to Undergo CPR Training,” to increase CPR knowledge as “a single most effective first aid intervention that can be administered to an individual suffering from cardiac arrest.”

He joined PHA president Raul Lapitan, PHA vice president Jorge Sison and PHA advocacy committee chairman Orlando Bugarin in reaching out to the ordinary people to extend CPR training in many parts of the country.

Under HB 5891, a student must be certified by his/her competent school authority as having undergone the CPR training program, at least once, before being allowed to graduate.

He stressed the importance of being a CPR-equipped person, citing the knowledge to administer the basic chest compressions within three to five minutes will increase the victim’s chance of survival.

Sison warned asthma, electrolyte imbalance, severe dehydration and heat stroke may trigger a cardiac problem.
