“Be assertive.”

This is the advice of President Rodrigo Duterte to Filipinos in Japan, should they find themselves being given poor service or are being subjected to extortion activities in government agencies and in public places like airports, when they are back in the Philippines.

In his speech before the Filipino community in Tokyo, he told the audience, “para makatulong kayo sa akin, pagpasok nyo sa airport, may Custom official na humihingi sa inyo ng pera, sampalin ninyo! Sabihin ninyo, sabi yan ni Mayor (referring to himself). You create a scene in public places. Naririyan ang media. Sabihin ninyo, hinihingan kayo ng pera.”

The President’s remarks were wildly applauded and cheered by the crowd.

He also cautioned the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Japan, “yung mga bagahe ninyo, huwag namang isang tonelada. Mga sampung bag, ok na yan. Huwag ka lang pa-assert, assert, tapos durugista ka pala.”

Turning a bit serious, Duterte said, he hopes Filipinos in the future will not need to leave their homeland to seek jobs abroad.

“Sana ang trabaho nyo sa Japan, hanggang sa inyo na lang. Yung next generation, sa Pilipinas na,” he said.

He added, “I want to make life more comfortable for you. Pag umuwi kayo sa Pilipinas, huwag na kayong matakot.”

Duterte recalled, before he assumed the presidency, the Philippines was like an airplane that could not take off from the runway.

He went on to discuss his administration’s campaign against corruption, drugs and criminality.

The Filipino audience kept applauding all throughout the President’s keynote address.
