ANGKASangga Party-list first nominee George Royeca on Wednesday thanked the government for approving his request to allow the operation of motorcycle taxis while waiting for the passage of a permanent law.
Royeca, who is also the chief executive officer of ride-hailing service app Angkas, made this appeal during a high-level meeting with Transportation department officials led by Secretary Vince Dizon.
“This is also a victory for the thousands of commuters who depend on motorcycle taxis to reach their jobs and other destinations quickly,” said Royeca.
He emphasized the importance of continuing motorcycle taxi operations for both riders and commuters, particularly as they rely on this affordable mode of transport to navigate Metro Manila’s congested roads.
After the discussion, Dizon committed to issuing a Department Order that would provide legal status for motorcycle taxi services until a legislative measure is passed.
“The long-term solution for the ongoing operations of motorcycle taxis will require action from Congress. That is why the DOTr is dedicated to collaborating with lawmakers to develop viable solutions that greatly benefit both our riders and commuters,” Dizon said.
The transportation chief also mentioned that motorcycle taxis must fully comply with the recently issued Department Order on road safety, as well as existing standards regarding roadworthiness and driver qualifications.
Additionally, Royeca reiterated his plan to integrate motorcycles into the national transport plan, as many informal workers, tricycle drivers, vendors, and freelancers depend on them for their livelihoods.
He pledged that ANGKASangga would continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of informal workers in Congress, addressing urgent issues such as public transportation, job creation, and worker protection.
ANGKASangga supports key labor reforms, including paid sick leave, government-mandated benefits for informal workers, and accident insurance for members of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA).
