The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has banned campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and anyone who violates the rule will face penalties under the Omnibus Election Code.

In a Viber message Comelec Chairman George Garcia cited Resolution No. 10999, which specifically forbids all election campaigning and partisan political activities during the two Holy Week holidays.

“Any election campaign or partisan political activity for or against any candidate outside of the campaign period is prohibited and shall be considered as an election offense punishable under Sections 263 and 264 of the Omnibus Election Code,” Garcia said.

He said candidates who violate these regulations could incur fines, face imprisonment, or be disqualified from holding public office, citing provisions in the law.

“This restriction is designed to uphold the importance of Holy Week and ensure a fair election process,” Garcia added.

The campaign period for national candidates started on February 11, while local candidates began their campaigns on March 28. Both campaigns will wrap up on May 10, right before Election Day on May 12.
