Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial candidate and Makati City Mayor Abby Binay vowed to work for the grant of regular salaries to barangay officials and employees instead of honoraria and security of tenure for trained barangay health workers.

Binay made the commitment during her visit to Quezon City residents and city officials led by Mayor Joy Belmonte.

The aspiring senator said elected barangay officials, who play a significant role in every community deserve regular salaries as they currently only receive honoraria.

Binay also reiterated the need for “professional qualifications for certain barangay officials, such as making barangay treasurers accountable for the position’s duties, like being certified accountants.”

During her Quezon City visit, Belmonte urged her constituents to make Binay the number one senator in Quezon City, expressing confidence in the Makati mayor’s experience and capability as a lawyer, a congresswoman, and mayor.

In her message to over 1,500 women participants in the Kababaihan Dance Competition at Quezon City Hall, Binay underscored the multiple roles of women that make each one of them a “superwoman” who can even do better than men.

She cited the challenges hurdled by women mayors like Belmonte and herself to show that balancing career with family life can be done.

“As a woman, it’s very challenging to be a mayor because more than being a mayor, we are also mothers. We are also wives… You have to buy food when you get home. You have to do the grocery shopping. You have to take care of your husband,” Binay said.

The mayor was also warmly greeted by city officials and some 2,000 members of various civil society organizations of Quezon City.

Binay also joined a meeting with some 1,000 urban farmers where she lauded the Quezon City Government for its continuing support for urban farming to optimize the city’s agricultural lands, citing its importance for food security.

She also reassured them of Makati’s readiness to help in any way possible.

“Just remember, because we live next door, you can always count on us. If you need help, whatever it may be, because we are a family in Metro Manila,” Binay said.
