Leave guns behind to avoid delays, air travelers warned

Airport and police authorities are urging passengers not to bring firearms or other prohibited items to avoid flight delays, inconvenience, and arrests, especially during the election period when a gun ban is in effect.

The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) issued this appeal as the agency continues to apprehend individuals carrying banned items at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Recently, the OTS team intercepted a passenger who was in possession of a loaded firearm containing seven bullets.

The Police Aviation Security Group requested that the passenger present his licenses and permit for the firearm, along with a certificate of exemption from the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). The passenger was unable to provide these documents.

As a result, the passenger, who was traveling to Davao City, was arrested and taken into custody for violating Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition, as well as the Omnibus Election Code.

OTS Administrator Undersecretary Crizaldo Nieves emphasized the importance of complying with legal requirements when transporting firearms, particularly during the election period.

“As the election gun ban is being enforced, we strongly advise all firearm owners to secure all necessary permits from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and exemptions from the COMELEC before bringing firearms through airports, seaports, bus terminals, or train stations,” Nieves stated.

“Without the appropriate licenses, permits, and exemptions, individuals become liable under the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition and the Omnibus Election Code,” he added.
