Cardiologist Willie Ong formalized his second bid for the Senate in the coming 2025 midterm elections through his wife, doctor Liza Ong, who filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on Thursday.
Willie, who revealed his sarcoma diagnosis a few weeks ago, has defied illness in announcing his Senate run under the Isko Moreno-led Aksyon Demokratiko.
Liza tearfully addressed the media and thanked the people who prayed for her husband. Lawyer Gilbert Lauengco and senatorial aspirant Rep. Wilbert Lee accompanied her.
According to Lauengco, Willie will utilize both physical and social media campaigns as he is set to visit several places.
“He will be able to go back to the Philippines by the end of November, and he will be available to physically campaign by December. But, as always, his core constituency is his online followers. So he will do Facebook, YouTube – social media also,” Lauengco said.
Earlier this morning, Willie said in an interview that his diagnosis was a “divine intervention” in deciding to run for this year. The 2022 vice presidential candidate is currently in Singapore for his cancer treatment.
“If I did not have the sarcoma, I would not have run because I saw no reason in running. But with the sarcoma and everything happening, it’s like divine intervention. You see things differently. It’s like a mission from God,” Willie said over Bilyonaryo News Channel.
