Cops nab another suspect in theft of Comelec chief’s bag

Another suspect in the theft of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia’s bag was arrested in Bacoor, Cavite on Thursday afternoon, the Southern Police District (SPD) reported on Friday.

The arrest of alias ‘Rawraw’ around 5 p.m. in Barangay Molino on August 21 followed the capture of a female suspect in Zapote, Las Pinas City last Wednesday, August 20.

“The arrested individual was one of the suspects previously listed as at large. This arrest follows the prior apprehension of a first suspect, whose inquest proceedings had already been concluded,” the SPD said in a statement.

The two suspects, aged 41 and 44 years old, are now detained in the Pasay City police station and were charged with theft before the city prosecutor’s office.

SPD Director Brig. Gen. Randy Arceo commended Pasay City police commander Col. Joselito De Sesto and his men for the swift action they are taking in going after those responsible for the theft.

“This is a testament to the dedication of our men and women in uniform to bring those responsible to justice. We will not rest until all individuals involved in this case have been apprehended. We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in our jurisdiction,” said Arceo.

Police said Garcia’s stolen bag containing identification cards and a mobile phone was recovered, but the cash was no longer found.

Investigation showed that the theft happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, at a local restaurant along the service road of Roxas Boulevard in Barangay 10, Pasay City.

Garcia, who just came from a Senate hearing, was waiting for his order at the establishment together with other guests when six persons arrived, posing as customers.

The group managed to steal the bag, which was placed beside Garcia’s chair. A few moments later, Garcia discovered that his bag was missing.

CCTV footage showed that the suspects fled onboard a vehicle.

The suspects are believed to be members of the notorious Salisi Gang, involved in similar incidents in south Metro Manila. The gang is known for distracting victims while accomplices steal unattended bags or devices.”

The gang operates in various public places such as malls, restaurants, airports, fast food joints, and computer shops, waiting for opportunities to prey on distracted victims.
