The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of civilians on Pag-asa Island amid renewed attention on developments in the West Philippine Sea.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police continue to work closely with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Coast Guard, and local government units to protect residents on the island.
“The Philippine National Police is closely coordinating with the AFP, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the local government to ensure that civilians on Pag-asa Island remain safe and protected. We have clear inter-agency coordination for security and emergency response in the area,” Nartatez said.
Through its Maritime Group, the PNP has been actively implementing safety measures and conducting community engagements on the island to ensure that residents continue to receive police services.
Nartatez said that while the AFP leads external defense operations, the PNP is focused on maintaining peace and order within the community and addressing the day-to-day concerns of civilians.
“While the AFP takes the lead in external defense, the role of the PNP is to ensure internal security, public safety, and peace and order in the community. We have personnel in the area to provide police service and assistance,” he said.
The PNP chief added that the police regularly monitor the situation on the ground and are ready to respond to any issues affecting civilian safety, humanitarian needs, or public order.
He stressed that external tensions should not disrupt the daily lives of residents on Pag-asa Island, assuring that the PNP remains committed to preserving stability in the community.
